Difference between IELTS Academic and PTE Academic

IELTS Academic is a well-known English language proficiency test among students who look forward to studying in English-speaking countries for the past many years. While PTE Academic has gained popularity among students recently. Since both the tests sound similar, you may think which test to take. The following questions will help you in deciding which test suits you the best.

1. Which score does my ideal university accepts?

The most important factor is the admission requirement of your preferred school/college. Most universities in the UK and Australia accept both scores of IELTS Academic and PTE Academic whereas few of them accept only IELTS. Check out the admission requirements of your preferred school and then decide which test to take.

2. Can I perform better on a computer or on the paper?

One of the major differences between the two tests is that, IELTS Academic is paper-based while PTE Academic is computer-based. If you are someone who is good with screens and keyboards, then you can definitely read and type fast on a computer, so choose PTE Academic. However, if you are someone who is not computer savvy then you can choose IELTS Academic.

3. What about the accents?

Most of the time you will hear a British accent in the listening section on the other hand you will hear a variety of accents such as North American, Australian and Indian in PTE Academic. If you are a good listener and you understand different accents, then you can choose PTE Academic. Otherwise, IELTS Academic will be a better choice for you. Accent plays a crucial role in understanding information in the listening section.

4. Are you comfortable with the face-to-face interview?

In IELTS Academic to assess your English-speaking abilities, you will face an interview with the examiner. You will be asked to discuss some topics with an examiner and your speech will be recorded. Some test-takers get anxious and take pressure during the speaking section. While, in PTE Academic you will talk to a computer during the speaking section, which will be recorded. Some of the test takers may find this more comfortable and easier.
